Chapter 3.1c Mixing Complementary Shades and adding White

I used acrylics throughout and used titanium white as the mixing white.

I first started off by deciding on three complementary colour options to work with:

  • yellow and violet,
  • orange and blue,
  • green and red.
Then I used various of the primary colours to mix.

Yellow and Violet

Orange and Blue

I found this produced a good range of grey tones

Red and Green
This also produced and interesting range of tones

I took to grey tones and diluted them with water.

  • Blue (prussian) and orange (alizarin and Cad med yellow) + white
  • Red (Process Magenta) and Green (Prus B and Cad med yellow) + white

Then I made shade cards from three grey tones I'd mixed

  • Prussian blue and orange
  • Yellow and violet
  • Red and green

I was really pleased with the range of tones produced.

Then I put the whole lot together to see the complete range of shades made.

One of my workings, trying to match up colours.
