This was an unexpected start to the module as normally books are reserved for the final chapter. I wonder if it's the calm before the storm of drawing various body parts and self portraits. Can't be good. Anyway I made five different books with pouches or folders. I've made them more as examples, because at this point I don't quite know the size and scope of the work I'll be doing later in the module. I'll make a final folder book to store work as the module progresses.
I referred throughout for ideas and instructions from the bible of book making 'Making Handmade Books' by Alisa Golden. It goes down as one of the best 'how to....' type of books I've ever bought. It's given me hours of pleasure and not a little head scratching at times.
Book 1
X Book with Pockets
In some respects the simplest of books I made, although the folding to get turning pages did cause momentary bewilderment:
 |
| Ready to form into the folded book |
 |
| Folds with various small prints inserted |
For the cover I found some pages I'd printed for Module 3 (using rubbers) and stuck these onto card. Then attached these to the outer folded pages
This book is 14cm x 13.5cm.
Book 2
Origami Wallet with a sewn binding.
I bought some glassine paper recently. Originally I bought it for interleaving pages completed for Chapter 10 of the last module. However, I rather like the paper and thought it would prove useful for other things, such as printing on. It dawned on me too that it might work well for a folder book. It did. Also it's very translucency allowed for accurate cutting, always a good thing when book making. This book is 12.5 x 12.5cm.

| Cover made from 'rubber' printing from Module 3, pasted onto heavier gsm paper. |
 |
| Inserts made from cut up piece of work from Module 2 - collages |
Book 3
Flag book with vertical envelopes.
I enjoyed making flag books for the final chapter of Module 3 and thought this would be a great way of getting a concertina envelope book. Not having any suitably sized envelopes, I made some in brown paper. Alas I ended up having to stick them together with masking tape. Maybe I read some of the instructions incorrectly. This was however, one of the most useful books I made and will definitely be considered as a storage method for drawings etc made for this module. This book is 18 x 22cm with a ribbon tie. The book is decorated inside and on the covers with work done for module 3.
I forgot to take some early photographs of cutting paper etc. Apologies:
 |
| Right side of envelope |
 |
| Reverse secured with masking tape |
 |
| Flag spine and first envelope completed |
 |
| All five envelopes |
 |
| Envelopes attached to the flag binding |
 |
| Flag stretched out |
 |
| Thick card used for front and back covers |
 |
| Front cover attached to flag binding |
 |
| Front cover opened up |
 |
| Reverse cover with ribbon attached between layer of paper |
 |
| Book opened fully stretched |
 |
Closed and secured book
Book Four
Origami Wallet book with tied binding
I've looked at this idea a few times and it just seemed the right time to give it a go. However it is easily the least practical and most fragile book I made, so a nice idea but not one to revisit for the purposes of this module. This is a smallish book 13.5 x 13.5 cm. I made origami wallets out of various kinds of paper: brown paper, newspaper, glassine paper, washi paper and 180gsm paper. It was quite an effort to tie the binding and make complete sense of the instructions.
I'm afraid I completely forgot to take photographs of work in progress.
A close up of the wallets with early tying in progress. Took a bit of thought until I realised two ties per wallet were required. One to tie to the above wallet and one to tie to the below wallet. Hope that makes sense.
For the front cover I used a print from an intaglio plate I'd made previously to try out a new technique
A close up of the knots.
Book 5
Double pocket accordion book
The largest and simplest book, made with 150gsm paper. A simple accordion book with rather deep pockets to allow for a smaller set of pockets to be attached for smaller drawings etc. The book was decorated with work made for modules 2 and 3. It was covered with a large circular print designed out of ideas for Module 4 Chpt 10. This book is approx. 30cm x 19.5cm. Again I omitted to photograph the early stages of paper folding, but this was not exactly rocket science:
First two folds of accordion decorated with positioning for additional pockets marked in.
Front pockets made with tabs at each side and base. These were folded in and then the tabs were glued to the book.
Filled pockets
The two ends were secured with masking tape to stop work from falling out.
I used the space at the sides of the pockets to create a box for describing the contents of each pocket
Front and back covers attached
Front and back covers folded side by side. Lino print.
All the books together
