After reading your comments, which were really good to read, I thought about the use of colour and content in printing and also printing off the edges of the page. So here are a few things I did once I'd read the comments.
From the marvellous Cressida Cowell - her toddler's book on Hiccup Haddock Horrendous (?) the Third. Which if you can get it I'm sure your son would love. All mine did.
Playing with monotone background and text in various fonts. Also background contrasting in theme with the content of the words.
Text lifted from the book in various scripts on a background of printed waves, detail first.
And same text on a flowery wallpaper background found on the Internet and put through Photoshop
Printing off the edges of the paper. I enjoyed this. Set the printer to print at A3 and ran through A4 paper. Generally the middle sheet of the printing routine gave the best results
